Mumbai, August 1: A gay waiter at the Kankas restaurant burst into tears after a customer wrote homophobic remarks on the receipt instead of the tip. The incident occurred two weeks ago on Sunday while he was serving a group of young men. The waiter, Noah Bierig, is a 19-year-old working at Bubba’s 33 in Wichita, US. Bierig noticed their gaze on his painted nails and a Pride bracelet.
During his regular Sunday shift, Bierig sensed tension at one of his tables, where a customer seemed fixated on his painted nails and Pride bracelet, a meaningful gift from his mother upon coming out. "The first time I approached the table, they shot me a couple of dirty looks. Each time I walked away, I could hear them laughing," Bierig recalled. Despite feeling uncomfortable, he remained professional, striving to serve them like any other customer. However, the situation escalated when the customers left, leaving Bierig unsettled by their behaviour. The incident has sparked outrage in the LGBTQ community. Community’s Reaction to the Incident
After the incident, one of Bierig's friends posted the receipt online, revealing the customer's name and the slur. The post quickly went viral, leading to widespread backlash against the customer. People online condemned his shameful behaviour and demanded an apology.
His friends took action by establishing an online fund through Proud of Wichita, the local LGBTQ+ chamber of commerce, to support the mistreated server. Despite the initiative, Bierig expressed humility and declined to accept any of the funds raised, stating that whatever proceeds were collected would be donated.
