Lucknow, December 22: A total of 164 cases were registered by the Uttar Pradesh in connection with the incidents of violence taken place during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. According to the UP Police, 879 persons were arrested and 5,312 people taken into preventive detention during the protests. Anti-CAA Protests in Uttar Pradesh: Aligarh City Schools to Remain Closed on December 23.

In the anti-CAA protests, 288 police personnel also received injuries. Notably, 61 cops received firearm injuries. Meanwhile, the UP Police also registered 76 cases and arrested 108 people across the state in connection with objectionable/misleading posts on social media on the Citizenship Amendment Act. According to reports, the action was taken against 15,344 social media posts.

Meanwhile, at least 18 people have lost their lives in various incidents of violence during anti-CAA protests across the state. On Saturday, police claimed that more than 1,000 rounds were fired by protestors. UP Police claimed that they did not fire a single bullet during the protests. Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police OP Singh claimed that the protesters used children and women as their shield. He further claimed that the deaths were the result of the cross-firing between the protesters.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday set up a four-member panel that will assess damage to public and private property during the violence in anti-CAA protests. The panel will identify the trouble makers and impose fine on them, and if they fail to pay the amount, their properties will be confiscated.
