Barabanki, July 20: In a horrific incident, a Dalit man was set on fire after locals suspected him to be a thief. The victim, Sujit Kumar, entered a house to avoid stray dogs when some people mistook him for a thief and thrashed him before trying to burn him alive. The incident took place in Raghopur village in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district on Friday. According to police, Kumar was on his way to his in-law's house when around 2 pm stray dogs started running after him. In his attempt to escape from dogs, Kumar entered a house. The occupants of the house mistook him to be a thief. They first assaulted him and then tried to burn him alive by pouring petrol on him. He was later rushed to Civil Hospital, Lucknow. He sustained burn injuries on his back but his condiction was stated to be stable. 18 Killed in Hooch Tragedy, Confirms Barabanki DM.

An FIR has been registered against four people under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code in this regard. Two of the four accused named in the FIR, Shravan and Umesh Yadav, have been arrested and a hunt is on to nab the others, police told PTI.
