UP: Elderly Woman Falls at Feet of Inspector to Register FIR Over Son's Death, Cop Sacked After Video Goes Viral

Lucknow, January 20: The police department of Uttar Pradesh is facing heat after a video showed an elderly woman falling at feet of a police inspector to register an FIR over the death of her 20-year-old son. After a 27-second clip of the incident went viral on social media, SHO Tej Pratap Singh was removed from his post and transferred to the Police Lines by Lucknow SSP Kalanidhi Naithani.
In the viral video, the elderly woman, identified as Brahma Devi, is seen pleading with hands folded that a First Information Report be lodged over the death of her son Akash Yadav who was crushed under a malfunctioning machine. All the while, Tej Pratap Singh, who was in-charge of the police station, sat leisurely, his legs crossed, watching her. As the cop didn't pay heed, she fell at his feet. The incident took place outside the police station at Gudamba in Lucknow where relatives of Akash Yadav had gone to lodge an FIR against Ajay Gupta, owner of the plywood factory where the deceased used to work. In a statement, the Lucknow police have said the inspector has been moved from the police station and an inquiry is being conducted by a senior officer. After the video went viral, an FIR has also been registered against the factory owner, but no arrest has been made. Ironically, the Gudamba police station was recently ranked among India’s three best-performing police stations.
"Extremely courteous" staff was one of the strengths of the police station, the Ministry of Home Affairs had said. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is also a Lok Sabha MP from Lucknow, had given an award to the police station.
