UNSC to Hold Closed-Door Meeting Today to Discuss Article 370 Abrogation in Jammu & Kashmir
A closed-door meeting of United States Security Council (UNSC) on India's decision to dilute Article 370, to scrap special status of Jammu and Kashmir will take place today at 10 am. According to reports, Islamabad wanted to address the UNSC, but had to settle for a closed-door meeting.
New York, August 16: A closed-door meeting of United States Security Council (UNSC) on India's decision to scrap special status of Jammu and Kashmir by diluting Article 370 will take place on Friday. The meeting has been called after Pakistan wrote a letter to Security Council President against India's move. Poland, which currently holds the council's rotating presidency, has listed the matter for discussion at 10:00 am local time. Pakistan’s all-weather ally China then asked for a closed-door consultation in the UNSC after Pakistan’s letter. A UN diplomat had told news agency PTI, “China asked for closed consultations on the Security Council agenda item ‘India Pakistan Question’. After India’s decision to scrap special status of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi formally called for an emergency meeting of the UNSC. According to reports, Islamabad wanted to address the UNSC, but had to settle for a closed-door meeting. India’s ally Russia supported New Delhi’s decision. It said that the decision to dilute Article 370 was taken under the constitutional framework.

The Narendra Modi government on August 5 scrapped the provisions of Article 370 which granted special status to the state of Kashmir. The Centre also divided the state into two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Officially, the state will get UT status on October 31.
