Chandigarh, Sep 30: Union Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh triggered a row when he made an insensitive remark on martyrs. Speaking at Parakram Parv event, to mark two years of surgical strikes, Birender Singh said he would ask Haryana government to give higher compensation because rarely a soldier from the state dies. Family members of martyrs who attended the event took exception of the minister's statement.
"I will ask the Haryana government to raise compensation from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore because soldiers from the state don't die daily," Birender Singh was quoted as saying. Soon after Singh left the stage, family members of martyred jawans protested his 'insensitive' remarks. They reportedly said the minister should send his own children at the border to sacrifice their lives rather than making such comments on soldiers who lost their lives for the country.
