New Delhi, Aug 16: Two men, identified as Darvesh Shahpur and Naveen Dalal, posted a video on social media claiming that they were involved in the attack on Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid.

Calling it an "Independence Day gift" to the nation, the duo, in their video claim they had intended to eliminate Khalid for his "anti-national" and "anti-India" views.

The self-proclaimed assailants said Khalid was under their radar after he

"coined the slogan of Bharat tere tere tukde honge...". Claiming to be from Haryana, the men said, "There's a saying that goes in our region...if there's a mad dog it should be killed immediately".

The video was posted by Naveen Dalal on Facebook. The social media profiles of the duo define them as "gau rakshaks" or cow vigilantes.

The duo further added that they will be surrendering themselves before the police on August 17, at 12pm, outside the house of Kartar Singh Sarabha in Ludhiana's Sarabha village. Kartar Singh was a Sikh revolutionary and freedom fighter who died in 1915.

The attack on Umar Khalid was carried out on Monday outside the Constitution Club in Delhi. Eye-witnesses claimed Khalid was attacked from behind by a unidentified individual. After the student leader's aides intervened, the accused ran from the spot and fired a shot in the air. The gun was dropped by him at the spot before fleeing, reports said.

The Delhi Police has registered a case, with a search being launched to nab the attacker. The video released by the accused has been shared by Khalid with the police officers probing the attack on him.
