The decision has been taken in a bid to maintain standards in higher education. The new notification will come into force from the recruitment session, starting July 1, 2021. Besides this, the candidate has to undergo a month-long induction before taking up the role of assistant professor.

Till now, college teachers who did not have doctorate degrees would be promoted to the post of an associate professor based on their academic and research performance, and interviews. However, with the new rule, the controversial academic appraisal requirement will be replaced with PhD.

As per earlier reports,  Education Minister Prakash Javdekar clarified that research would continue to be mandatory for those who teach in universities.
