Mumbai, December 24: Amid the protests and rising tension over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday assured the Muslims that he will not allow detention centres to be set up in Maharashtra under the NRC. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Thackeray said his Government will ensure that there would not be any injustice to them. CAA Protests: 'Those Born Before 1987 or Whose Parents Are Born Before 1987 Are Indians', Says Government.

Thackeray made this statement while he was speaking to a delegation of Muslims on Monday. The newly appointed chief minister met the Muslims to listen to their concerns amid the ongoing fear and panic in the state regarding the NRC and CAA. On Sunday, during his address at a mega BJP rally in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the CAA had nothing in it against Muslims. Talking on NRC, the Prime Minister said NRC was meant for Assam and his government had taken no decisions yet on it. In his address, PM Modi attacked the Opposition and said it is indulging in misinformation and false campaigns over the CAA. It must be noted that the NRC is only implemented in Assam as of now. However, the government has decided to prepare a National Population Register (NPR) by September 2020 to lay the foundation for rolling out a citizens' register across the country.
