New Delhi, December 17: Uddhav Thackeray, the newly elected  Chief Minister of Maharashtra, on Tuesday compared violence at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) to that of Jallianwala Bagh. "Students are like a 'Yuva bomb' and we request the central government to not do, what they are doing, with students", Thackeray was quoted by ANI. The Jamia Millia university witnessed a wave of violence on Sunday after police entered the campus and used force to control the mob. There are reports hat Police scared the students with police brutality and also caused huge damage to university property.

Several students, who were protesting over the the Citizenship Amendment Act, have sustained injuries in the police’s lathicharge. The violence reported at the Jamia University ripped angry waves through the country since Sunday evening. Students across the nation took out protests and widespread demonstrations in several campuses, including in Hyderabad, Lucknow and Mumbai. In connection with the violence on Sunday, a total of 10 people, many of whom have criminal backgrounds, have been arrested.  No student has been arrested by Delhi Police.

On Monday, Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar asserted that the university will not tolerate police presence on campus and demanded a high-level inquiry into the crackdown on university students. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Tuesday, while hearing the petition against police action on protesting students, asked petitioners to approach High Courts within the jurisdiction of incidents where the protest against new Citizenship law took place.
