Two People Arrested For 'Defamatory' Posts Against Sarbananda Sonowal And Biplab Deb

Morigaon, June 14: The Assam police have arrested a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) social media team who had being vocal against the state government and insulting Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Facebook Posts. The police on Thursday arrested Nitumoni Bora, a BJP IT cell member from Morigaon district, for communal and derogatory posts on social media. On similar allegation, three other people were picked up for questioning across the state. In a recent post, Bora claimed that the ruling BJP government in the state is unable to protect Assamese people from migrant Muslim settlers. "There was an FIR lodged against Nitumoni Bora by Raju Mahanta last night based on which we have arrested him. It was stated in the FIR that he had posted a derogatory comment against the Chief Minister," Morigaon's Superintendent of Police Swapnanil Deka said.

According to news agency IANS, the residence of another BJP IT cell member, Hemanta Baruah, was raided by Cops. Baruah hails from Majuli district, the constituency represented by the CM. A BJP supporter from Tripura, Anupam Paul, was also arrested for spreading fake news after the family life of Chief Minister Deb.

Paul had been listed a prime accused in a suo moto case in late April and charged with defamation, forgery and criminal conspiracy. Responding to it, Chief Minister Biplap Kumar Deb claimed "this is a deep-rooted conspiracy to tarnish my image. It is a baseless and motivated post which is in bad taste." Earlier, Tripura police also arrested a journalist and police constable for sharing Paul's post. The post was about marital discord between Deb and his wife.
