Thiruvananthapuram, July 25: The Thiruvananthapuram special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Wednesday awarded death sentence to two police officers in connection with a custodial death in 2005.

An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police K Jithukumar and a constable SV Sreekumar have been awarded capital punishment in the case. A fine of Rs 2 lakh each has also been imposed on them.

In 2005, Udayakumar (27), who was taken into custody for questioning in a theft case, died in custody after being tortured by police. Udayakumar and his friend were picked up by the officers from the Sreekandeshwaram Park in the city.

The duo was taken into custody as cash amounting to Rs 4500 was found in Udaykumar's possession. The two police officers had thrashed and tortured Udayakumar; they even forced him to confess the crime. Udayakumar died in custody. According to the autopsy report, 22 injury marks were found on his body.
