Tushar Mehta Appointed New Solicitor General of India, Post Was Vacant Since October Last Year
Mehta's appointment as the Solicitor General comes 11 months after the post fell vacant, with the resignation of then SG Ranjit Kumar on October 20, 2017.
New Delhi, October 10: Veteran advocate Tushar Mehta has been appointed as the new Solicitor General of India by the Centre. The decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet on Wednesday.
As per the statement issued by the government, Mehta would take upon the charge with immediate effect. His tenure would continue till June 30, 2020, or any further order in this regard to be issued by the Centre. Notably, Mehta was currently serving as the Additional Solicitor General -- the post he was elevated to in mid-2014 after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power. Earlier, he served as a senior advocate at the Gujarat High Court.
In his four-year stint as the ASG, Mehta has represented the government in several key cases, including the challenge to Section 66A of Information Technology Act.
