Tripura Panchayat Elections 2019 Results: BJP Wins 82% Seats Uncontested As Opposition Fails to Field Candidates

The BJP in Tripura has won 82 per cent of village panchayat seats uncontested as the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), Congress, and Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), an NDA ally, could field candidates in just 18 per cent of total seats.

New Delhi, July 10: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura has won 82 per cent of village panchayat seats uncontested as the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), Indian National Congress, and Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), an NDA ally, could field candidates in just 18 per cent of total seats. Around 7,488 candidates from several political parties filed nominations for elections to 6,646 panchayat seats. For village panchayat elections, ruling BJP has fielded 6,127 candidates while the Congress, CPM and IPFT have fielded 727, 408, and 48 candidates respectively.

For panchayat samities, BJP has filed candidates in all 419 seats, Congress in 74, CPM in 93, IPFT in 92 and Independents in 15 seats. In 116 Zilla Parishad seats, BJP is contesting all, Congress (81), CPM (93), IPFT (9) and independents in seven seats.

The opposition parties- Congress and CPM- have alleged that they could not field representatives due to violence by the saffron party in the state. Replying to them, BJP said that opposition is not getting candidates as people have rejected them.
