Adilabad, May 19: Triple Talaq, a controversial practice in Islamic law allowing a husband to divorce his wife by uttering the word "talaq" (divorce) thrice, has once again stirred debate, this time in Telangana. In Adilabad, a man identified as Abdul Ateeq resorted to modern means, sending a WhatsApp voice message to divorce his wife amid ongoing marital disputes. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, May 19, led to Ateeq's arrest by the Adilabad police following his wife, Jasmin's complaint.

Women Police Station Inspector G Srinivas confirmed that a case was registered against Ateeq under Section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019, as reported by the Times of India. Ateeq and Jasmin had been married for two years and were parents to two daughters. However, marital discord marred their relationship, leading to frequent disputes and eventually separation. With Jasmin and her daughters residing with her mother, the situation escalated when Ateeq remarried. Triple Talaq in Mumbai: Man Thrashes Wife, ‘Burns’ Her With Cigarette Before Pronouncing Verbal Divorce in Airoli, Accused Booked.

Legal troubles further exacerbated their differences, as Jasmin filed a harassment case against Ateeq in 2023. Additionally, she sought maintenance for their daughters through legal channels, resulting in a court order mandating Ateeq to pay Rs 7,200 per month. Despite the court's directive, Ateeq failed to comply, prompting Jasmine to pursue legal action against him. In response to mounting legal pressure, Ateeq resorted to sending a voice message to Jasmin via WhatsApp, declaring "triple talaq." Triple Talaq Over Dowry in Banda: UP Man Pronounces Verbal Divorce to Wife After Dowry Demand for Scorpio Not Met, Probe Launched.

Jasmin, in consultation with relatives from both families, decided to take legal action against Ateeq. Approaching the Adilabad police, Jasmin filed a complaint, leading to Ateeq's arrest. Sub-Inspector G Srinivas emphasised that this is the first instance in Adilabad where Section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act has been applied singularly, highlighting the authorities' commitment to enforcing laws against such discriminatory practices. Ateeq now faces judicial proceedings as the case unfolds, underscoring the significance of legal measures in protecting the rights of Muslim women and curbing the misuse of triple talaq.
