Triple Talaq Bill: Even Lord Ram Left Sita, Says Congress MP Hussain Dalwai, Apologises After Row Over Remark
Congress MP Hussain Dalwi sparked controversy by invoking Hindu God Lord Ram to defend the practice of instant divorce. Dalwi however, apologised for her statement.
New Delhi, August 10: Congress MP Hussain Dalwi sparked controversy by invoking Hindu God Lord Ram to defend the practice of instant divorce. Dalwi however, apologised for his statement. Speaking to Times Now he said, “My comments have been taken out of context. I meant women had been exploited historically through the analogy.” The Congress MP further added,” I apologise for the comments if they hurt anyone's religious sentiments.”
Earlier in the day, Dalwi sparked a row after he drew Ramanaya analogy while defending Triple Talaq. He said that even Lord Ram left Sita after doubting her, so the change is required. The remarks of Dalwi come at the time when the Modi government is to introduce the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 with new amendments in the Rajya Sabha today. The bill seeks to criminalise instant triple talaq.
The Cabinet on Thursday proposed three amendments in the Bill. The bill has been stuck in the upper house as opposition demands to make the offence bailable. The Lok Sabha passed the Triple Talaq Bill in December last year.
