New Delhi, December 31: As part of the Modi government's ambitious plan to redevelop the Central Vista or Rajpath in Delhi, a triangular Parliament and a new residence for the Prime Minister will be constructed. A separate building for the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and a biodiversity arboretum outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's residence) are also part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan. New Parliament Building by 2022? Seriously Considering Suggestions, Says PM Narendra Modi.

The new house for the Prime Minister will be next to Rashtrapati Bhavan at the Western end of Rajpath, said the report by Indian Express. At present, PM's residence is on the 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. The area between the Rashtrapati Bhawan and the Ridge will be turned into a national biodiversity arboretum, the report added. North and South Blocks, where the Cabinet Secretariat is housed, will be turned into museums. Fire at Lok Kalyan Marg, PMO Says Narendra Modi's Residential Area Not Affected by Blaze.

"It will be a triangular Parliament with state-of-the-art acoustics and three spires which will reflect the spirit of democracy. Each window in this new Parliament will be unique to reflect the diversity of India. The goal is to have the 75th-anniversary session (2022) inside the new Parliament," a senior official was quoted as saying. No existing heritage structures will be demolished, he added.

The existing British-era Parliament, which houses both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, could be converted into the 'Parliament of India Museum'. The new Parliament might have a Lok Sabha with a capacity of 900-1,000 and a Rajya Sabha with offices for all parliamentarians. HCP Design, Planning And Management Private Limited, Ahmedabad-based firm, has been given the contract to redevelop the Central Vista.

The existing Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan, North and South Blocks, Rajpath, India Gate and the National Archives were built by architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. The new structures are expected to be completed by 2022 -- when India would be celebrating its 75th year of Independence.
