Chennai, July 28: In what is believed to be a boon for transgender students in Tamil Nadu, a private school in Tiruchy (Tiruchirappalli) is all set to build the first hostel for LGBT students. According to reports, the hostel will be exclusively built for children with non-confirmed gender. The first of its kind initiative has been taken after it was observed that parents of transgender kids often disown them after which, they are forced to live on streets. According to reports, the hostel will be constructed in the campus of Sri Sivananda Balalaya School in Somarasampettai at the cost of Rs 32 lakhs. The Rotary Club of Tiruchy – Shakthi will help in building this hostel. According to a report by TOI, officials of the school launched ‘Siva-Shakthi’, the laying the foundation stone for the much-awaited hostel. The report informs that the hostel can accommodate about 40 children. Moreover, the school will take responsibility of the psychological, legal and medical counselling of the transgender kids till they turn 18.
Maj Gen NRK Babu (retd), correspondent and CEO of Swami Sivananda Vidhya Samiti, which runs the school, was quoted in the report saying that the hostel will mentally prepare them to face the world. "We will also send them to college so that they can pursue their higher studies,” he added.
