For the test phase, the new scheme has already been put into motion on a pilot basis on the Delhi-Mumbai highway. If the pilot project works out, then, the government might think of implementing the scheme nationwide, by replacing toll plazas with On-board unit devices, and release an official notification regarding this move.
The report published also stated that because of the introduction of FASTAG devices in September 2018, the revenue has grown significantly. Citing the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways report, the daily has quoted that the devices used by the vehicles use radio frequency identification technology and commuters use radio frequency identification technology.
Along with the FASTAG devices, On-board unit device would help the commuters to travel continuously as the amount will be deducted automatically from commuter's account. The only condition is being the commuters will have prepaid accounts linked to the devices to facilitate the process.
