TN Seshan, Former Chief Election Commissioner, Dies at 86 Due to Cardiac Arrest
Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, Tirunellai Narayana Iyer Seshan died on Sunday at an age of 87 years. Seshan was the 10th CEC of India.
Chennai, November 10: Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, Tirunellai Narayana Iyer Seshan died on Sunday due to cardiac arrest in Chennai. He was 86 years old. Seshan was the 10th CEC of India between 1990 and 1996. The former CEC was retired 1955 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu Cadre. He played an instrumental role in strict implementation election code of conduct. It was during his tenure when a limit was imposed on a candidate's expenditure per constituency.

Seshan was also a Cabinet Secretary and Member, Planning Commission of India, before being appointed the Chief Election Commissioner. In 1997, he contested for the post of President of India in 1997. However, he lost to KR Narayanan. The Madras High Court appointed T.N Seshan as an interim administrator to run the Pachaiyappa’s Trust in Chennai on October 17, 2012. Issuance of Voter ID cards and a crackdown on all forms of bribery during the electioneering were some of the most remarkable poll reforms undertaken by him. Seshan had also won the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1996. Seshan was born on December 15, 1932 in Palakkad district of Kerala.
Earlier this year in April, fake news had also surfaced claiming that Seshan had died. That was the second time that TN Seshan became a victim of death hoax. Last year also, similar message had surfaced.
