Tiruvallur, October 5: A 43-year-old BSP leader in Tamil Nadu, Vetri Vendhan, was arrested by Tiruvallur police for poisoning and killing 16 stray dogs. Vendhan, a district functionary and real estate businessman, reportedly killed the animals as they frequently attacked his pigeons and hens. The incident came to light after a local resident, Karthikeyan, filed a complaint when his pet stray dog died mysteriously on October 2.
TOI reported that Tiruvallur deputy superintendent of police, Tamilarasi, led the investigation. Police reviewed CCTV footage, which showed a man leaving food in the field, but the footage was unclear. Further investigation linked the incident to a similar case on September 22, in which more stray dogs were killed. With additional CCTV footage, the police identified Vendhan as the culprit. Upon interrogation, Vendhan admitted to poisoning the dogs, claiming they posed a threat to his flock of pigeons and hens. He confessed to leaving poison-laced food on two separate occasions, killing some dogs on September 21 and others on October 1. Vendhan was charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, for poisoning and killing the animals. He was produced before a magistrate in Tiruvallur and has been remanded in judicial custody.
