Bhubaneshwar, October 22: Tigress named Sundari from Odisha's Satkosia Tiger Reserve attacked a journalist who went to cover an attack by the same tiger. The tigress allegedly had killed a man, Trinath Sahu from Tainsi village in Angul. A journalist who went to cover the case was again attacked by Sundari. Sahu, the deceased had gone fishing at a local pond when the tigress apparently attacked him. To look into the case, a TV journalist named Raghunath Sahu headed to the scene. Sundari made an attack on the journalist, leaving him in a critical state. The locals were furious following the attacks and launched a protest in the area. Now there are demands to take the tiger back to Madhya Pradesh, from where she was brought in Odisha.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, Angul sub-collector, tehsildar and inspector were injured in stone-throwing protests by the locals. The locals said they cannot visit their farmlands due to the fear of Sundari. Biswajit Mohanty, Odisha-based wildlife expert was quoted in the same report, "The tigress had attacked a member of a monitoring team. The truth is there is little prey base in the core area...It should be sent back to Madhya Pradesh for the safety of people living near the reserve." How to Attract Tigers? Post the attacks, the forest department tried to chase away the tigress in the core area of the jungle, but the tigress herself moved into the core area. The residents also complained that she had attacked another woman in the month of September. Now a four-member team has been assigned a task of tranquilising the tigress so that she can be shifted to an enclosure. Sundari was brought in Odisha as a first relocation drive within the states to boost the tiger population.
