Mumbai, June 1: The Thane Municipal Corporation has declared an impending 10% reduction in water supply starting June 5 for regions under its governance that receive water from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This decision prevents potential water scarcity.

Affected areas will include Kisan Nagar, Balkum Pada, Panchpakhadi, and Louiswadi, undergoing a 5% supply cut. Thane, which procures 590 million litres per day (mld) from various sources, including 85 mld from the BMC, has called on residents to conserve water. Mumbai Water Cut News Update: Summer-End Shock; With Only 10% Stocks Left, Mumbai Faces 5% Water-Cut From May 30.

Concurrently, Mumbai is bracing for water supply curtailments as the BMC has announced cuts due to the depletion of water levels in lakes to below 10%. A 5% cut has been in effect since May 30, with further reductions anticipated in June. Additionally, parts of the western suburbs, including Andheri East and West, Jogeshwari, Vile Parle, and Goregaon, will face a 16-hour water suspension on May 29-30. This interruption is due to BMC’s infrastructure work to integrate new water pipelines and decommission an outdated one.

Residents of both cities are urged to use water sparingly during this period of reduced supply.  The total water stock in the city stood at 1.21 lakh million litres on May 30, which is only 8.39% of the required stock. On this day last year, the water stock was 1.88 lakh million litres (or 13%), while it was recorded at 2.63 lakh million litres (or 18.21%) in 2022. Mumbai Water Cut News: BMC Begins 5% Water Cut From Today, Supply To Be Slashed by 10% From June 5.

The citizens have been requested to conserve water. The situation is likely to persist until there is satisfactory quantum of rainfall and useful stock improvement in water bodies, the civic body noted. The BMC said that the monsoon remained active until October 15 in 2021 and 2022, but there was relatively very little rainfall in October last year. This resulted in about 5.64% less water stock in 2024 than last year.
