Thane Shocker: Man Strangles 65-Year-Old Neighbour to Death, Robs Her Jewellery to Pay for Betting Losses
In a shocking incident in Thane, a 65-year-old woman was found strangled to death in her first-floor flat at Vasant Niwas building, Dombivli (West). The victim, Asha Raykar, was murdered by her 27-year-old neighbour Yash Vichare who allegedly intended to rob Raykar of her jewellery after losing Rs 60,000 on a cricket betting app.
Thane, June 16: In a shocking incident in Thane, a 65-year-old woman was found strangled to death in her first-floor flat at Vasant Niwas building, Dombivli (West). The victim, Asha Raykar, was murdered by her 27-year-old neighbour Yash Vichare who allegedly intended to rob Raykar of her jewellery after losing Rs 60,000 on a cricket betting app.
She was discovered by concerned residents who noticed her flat was locked from the outside. Her daughter, living in Mira Bhayander, was immediately informed, and the Vishnu Nagar police were called.
Following an investigation, police arrested her Yash on charges of murder, reported Hindustan Times. Residents found Raykar’s lifeless body on Friday, prompting police involvement. Vichare was initially seen assisting investigators. CCTV footage revealed no outsiders had entered the building around the time of the murder, directing suspicion towards the residents. The police focused on those unemployed or with addictions, leading them to Vichare, who confessed under questioning. During the investigation, led by senior PI Sanjay Pawar, police discovered inconsistencies in Vichare’s statements. Additionally, Vichare had sent messages inviting friends to a party on the night of the murder. He eventually confessed to entering Raykar’s home on Thursday afternoon under the pretext of drinking water, strangling her, and stealing her chain and earrings. He sold the fake gold chain and real earrings for Rs 17,000, using the money to organize a party.
Vichare, a B.Com dropout, lived with his mother while his elder brother, the family's primary breadwinner, worked in the UK. His plans to join his brother in the UK failed due to visa issues, leading him to online cricket betting and significant losses. To repay his debts, he plotted Raykar’s murder, knowing she lived alone. He has been charged with murder.
