Hyderabad, March 29: In a shocking case reported from Telangana, a 15-year-old was allegedly stopped from giving 10th class examinations to marry her off. The incident took place at Hyderabad's Nacharam. According to a report in NDTV, the girl was stopped from giving social studies paper on Friday as her parents wanted to marry off. The girl somehow managed to contact Achyutha Rao, child rights activist and informed him about her situation. Rao, along with police reached the girl's home and rescued her. The girl's family claimed that her father was unwell so they decided to marry her off. One of the relatives argued that school's record which shows girl 15-year-old is wrong, as her real date of birth is 18 which is mentioned in Aadhar card. Meanwhile, police officials are investigating the matter. The girl can also be sent to a shelter home if needed said child activist, reported NDTV.
According to United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), marriage before 18 of age is a violation of human rights. These type of marriages often leads to early pregnancy, social isolation and increases the risk of domestic violence. Child marriages also compromise with girl's development and limits career opportunities.
