Cases of youth committing suicide are increasing at an alarming rate. In the recent times as and when board or entrance or recruitment examinations are conducted, many young minds appeared in the headlines for giving up on their life. In another shocking incident, a 16-year-old Odisha girl after failing in the Matric supplementary exams reportedly set herself on fire. The Board of Secondary Education (BSE) Odisha declared the class 10 supplementary exam results on July 23. And a few days later, on July 27, this event occurred at a residence in Panda colony near Power House in Rourkela city, Odisha.

The deceased teenager identified as Nirupama Mahalik hails from Chandbali in Bhadrak district. Not securing a passing mark in a subject or two in the regular class 10, Mahalik registered for the supplementary exam this year. However, she could not qualify either. The young girl was working at a catering service provider in Rourkela. Before the publication of the supplementary exam result, for the past one month, she has been staying at her uncle’s house. During the absence of her uncle and aunt, the 16-year-old locked herself inside a room.

Later she poured kerosene over her body and set her ablaze. The police officials reached the spot after being informed. Quoting media reports, they had to break the door of the house to recover the burnt body. Further investigation on the matter is underway. Earlier this month, a 16-year-old boy from Karnataka committed suicide by hanging himself after failing in the SSLC supplementary exam.
