It is Teachers’ Day today! Where schools and colleges are arranging functions to honour the teachers, the Government of India has today, September 5, 2018, awarded the teachers who showed innovation and gave value education to the children. The National Award to Teachers was initiated in 1958, and since then the educators from across the nation are felicitated for their remarkable performance every year. Out of the total 6,692 applicants that were received online for the national award this year, 45 teachers have been awarded. Three teachers from each district of the country were selected. An independent bench of experts completed the final selection process. All the finalists selected gave presentations before the jury—an opportunity to present their case in a fair and transparent way. This year, the selection process went through the newly revised guidelines. A final selection of 152 nominated candidates was sent to the central government. According to the revised scheme, self-nominations from teachers were invited online on mhrd.gov.in, the website of which was developed by the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI). Under the earlier system, the number of awardees had crossed 300. The reason, to restrict the number to 45 was necessary to restore the prestige of the awards. The award ceremony today began and ended with the national anthem by the presence of government representatives like Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha, President Ram Nath Kovind, and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu conferring the selected teachers with the honour.
