Chennai, July 22: In a tragic incident, a 60-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly killing her one-year-old granddaughter in Tamil Nadu's Ariyalur district after suspecting her daughter-in-law's alleged affair. The incident occurred last week, with the accused woman, Viruthambal, reportedly suspecting that her daughter-in-law, Sandhya, had an extramarital affair, leading to the birth of 15-month-old Krithika. Sandhya's husband, Raja, was in Singapore at the time of the child's birth.

According to a report from India Today, the incident unfolded when Sandhya left her two children at home to visit a nearby milk booth. Upon her return, she found Krithika unconscious. The child was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead. Based on Sandhya's complaint, the Tamil Nadu Police detained Viruthambal, who confessed to the crime after hours of questioning. She claimed that she force-fed the child sand in a fit of rage after Krithika threw sand at her brother. Tamil Nadu Horror: Woman Murders Husband Over Alcohol Addiction Dispute in Madurai.

In a separate incident last month, a man in the same district was booked for allegedly killing his 38-day-old grandson. The Onmanorama report states that the infant was drowned in a barrel of water due to superstitious beliefs. The grandfather, Veeramuthu, confessed to the crime, stating that he acted on the advice of an astrologer who deemed the month of Chaitra inauspicious for the child's birth. Veeramuthu himself lodged a complaint with the police, leading to an investigation and a search for the astrologer involved.
