Chennai, May 9: The wedding feast led to the untimely deaths of two villagers and left approximately 43 individuals seeking medical attention in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore. The victims, who had attended a wedding ceremony last Friday, exhibited severe symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting shortly after the event.
According to The New Indian Express report, health Department officials acted swiftly, setting up medical camps in four villages near Kullanchavadi in Cuddalore district to cope with the sudden influx of patients. To prevent the further spread of illness, the officials have also thoroughly cleaned drinking water tanks in the affected villages, supplementing the water supply with chlorinated water distributed through local panchayats. The situation escalated the following day as more villagers, who had partaken in the wedding's offerings, fell ill and sought treatment at nearby primary health centres and private hospitals. Some patients were subsequently referred to the Government General Hospital in Cuddalore for advanced care.
Among those affected were Thiruvengadam, 65, and V Narayanasamy, 55, both residents of Puliyur, who succumbed to their illnesses on Sunday and Monday, respectively. A senior Health Department official disclosed that Thiruvengadam's pre-existing chronic conditions had exacerbated his situation. However, they assured the medical teams' prompt response controlled the situation. In response to this public health crisis, Cuddalore Collector A Arun Thamburaj has directed officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to investigate the cause of the outbreak and implement necessary preventive measures to safeguard public health.
