Chennai, April 24: Parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will have to brace for heavy rainfall in the coming week due to a low pressure zone over the Equatorial Indian Ocean. The sudden change in the weather conditions will be witnessed adjoining South-West Bay of Bengal around April 25, an official of the Meteorological Department, Chennai informed. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low pressure area is likely to form over Equatorial Indian Ocean to the south of Sri Lanka towards end of 1st week and beginning of 2nd week of April. Monsoon Prediction: Brace For Below Normal Rains This Year, Says Skymet Weather Forecast. 

The low pressure area is very likely to intensify into a depression by April 27 and is believed to move towards Tamil Nadu coast and intensify into cyclonic storm by April 29. Meanwhile, private weather agency, Skymet Weather informed that on April 29 and 30, the cyclone will move over the central and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal. While on May 1, it would be close to the proximity of Bangladesh and Myanmar near the Arakan coast.

"The system would be moving in favourable weather conditions as Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) would be around 29 degrees Celsius that are conducive for the formation of cyclonic storms,” it said. The agency further informed that despite favourable factors, this storm, the very first one of this season doesn’t seem intense in nature.

"When the monsoon current is strong/aggressive/active, it tends to suppress the cyclonic storm", it added. Reports inform that the low-pressure area is expected to be formed by Thursday, before undergoing gradual strengthening into a powerful cyclone likely headed for Tamil Nadu, past East Sri Lanka, over the next three to four days.
