Chennai, June 21: Amid the ongoing water crisis in Tamil Nadu, the state government has accepted Kerala's help of 20 lakh drinking water. The decision was taken on Friday in a review meeting chaired by chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami. "We have decided to accept water from Kerala and we are thankful to CM Pinarayi Vijayan. It will be great if they can give us 2mld (million litres per day) every day," he said. The Tamil Nadu CM said that he could not write it earlier to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan because of poor health. Previously, some media reports stated that he had turned down the help. Palaniswami also requested the Kerala government to cooperate to store water in the Mullaperiyar dam. Thanking Vijayan for help, DMK President MK Stalin tweeted, "I wholeheartedly thank Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan for his timely offer to provide water to Tamil Nadu. Urge the government of Tamil Nadu to work with the government of Kerala to help citizens of our state tide over this unprecedented water crisis."

Tamil Nadu is facing severe water crisis, particularly in Chennai as four of its reservoirs, the main source of drinking water in the city, turned dry. The water supply has been cut by 40 per cent in Chennai and its suburbs.
