Mumbai, September 11: The swine flu scare is back to haunt the residents of Maharashtra with six deaths having been recorded over the past four days. The flu has so far claimed 20 deaths this year. In August itself, 11 people reportedly died in the state due to the H1N1 virus.
Earlier this year, between January and May, vaccine to prevent swine flu was administered free of cost to 54,000 people in Maharashtra, State Health Minister Deepak Sawant had said.
The Health Minister had said that Pune division had the highest number of vaccinations at 25,000 followed by Mumbai (12,000), Nagpur (4,000), Aurangabad (3,500) and Kolhapur (2,000).
Last year, a total of 42,492 people were administered the swine flu vaccine, officials said. The programme was started in the state in 2015, they added. Sawant had also said that an audit of the deaths last monsoon found that in most cases, patients did not seek the medical help immediately and deaths were caused due to delay in reporting cases.
