New Delhi, March 6: Indore on Wednesday was declared as India’s Cleanest City in Swachh Sarvekshan 2019. It is for the third consecutive time that Indore was adjudged as the cleanest city of the country. Meanwhile, Bhopal emerged as the cleanest capital city of the nation in the survey. Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Maharashtra were also declared as India's Top three Best Performing States.

In the Swachh Sarvekshan 2019, Gauchar in Uttarakhand emerged as India's Best Ganga Town, while the New Delhi Municipal Council area was given the ''Cleanest Small City'' award. Ahmedabad was declared the cleanest city in the 10 lakh plus population. Indore Declared Cleanest City in India: Bhopal & Chandigarh Ranked 2nd & 3rd Respectively in Swachh Survekshan 2018.

Union Miniter Hardeep Singh Puri also congratulated residents of Indore for the award. He tweeted, “Absolutely Brilliant! Indore is India’s Cleanest City for 3rd year running. My heartiest congratulations to the Swachhagrahis of Indore for their unmatched dedication & participation in transforming Swachh Bharat into a Jan Andolan. #SwachhSurvekshan2019”

In January this year, Puri launched a 25-day "Swachh Survekshan 2019", covering 4,237 towns and cities in the country. It was the fourth edition of the annual cleanliness survey of "Urban India" and was completely paperless. Swachh Sarvekshan Gramin 2018: Satara District of Maharashtra Bags Top Spot of Being Cleanest Among Rural Areas.

While launching the survey, the union minister had said that the objective of the Survekshan, was to encourage large scale citizen participation, ensure sustainability of initiatives taken towards garbage free and open defecation free cities and provide credible outcomes. The survey indicators carried a total of 5000 marks as compared to 4000 marks in Swachh Survekshan 2018
