Sushma Swaraj Death: Delhi Government Announces Two-Day State Mourning As Mark of Respect to Former External Affairs Minister

During the two-day state mourning, there will be no cultural events in the state. Meanwhile, all other government business and programmes, including the Anganwadi programme at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, will continue as scheduled.

New Delhi, August 7: The Delhi government on Wednesday declared a two-day state mourning in the national capital as a mark of respect for former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who died on Tuesday following a cardiac arrest. During this period, there will be no cultural events in the state. Meanwhile, all other government business and programmes, including the Anganwadi programme at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, will continue as scheduled.

Swaraj, 67, was brought to AIIMS in a critical condition after suffering a heart attack but soon passed away, the hospital officials said. "She was brought to AIIMS at 9.35 p.m.. Following her demise, Swaraj's body has been taken to her residence at 6, Jantar Mantar from the AIIMS. Her mortal remains would be kept at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters from 11 am to 1 pm for people to pay their last respects. The mortal remains will be taken to Lodhi Road crematorium at 4 pm, where the last rites would be performed.

The nation mourned the death of BJP veteran leader, after the news of her demise broke late on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Prakash Javadekar, and Harsh Vardhan, and BJP Working President J.P. Nadda arrived at the hospital soon after.

Condolences also poured in from foreign leaders on the death of the former External Affairs Minister. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid were among those who condoled her demise.
