Chandigarh, November 4: A dreadful road accident in Haryana's Sonipat on Sunday left at least 12 people dead and 7 severely injured. The fatal mishap was reported in the evening, around 6:15 pm. Police officials and rescue teams were immediately rushed to the site, located close to Mundlana village on the Gohana-Panipat highway.

The victims have been rushed to PGI Khanpur, where the condition of 7 injured commuters is stated to be serious. Whereas, 12 others have been declared dead. Among the deceased, three have been identified as residents of western Uttar Pradesh. They are: Farman Niyaz, Qasim Shabbir and Sabrez Qasim. The bodies of the deceased will be handed over to the kin after the autopsy is completed. The injured victims could be rushed to the nearest medical facilities in Delhi if their conditions further deteriorate.

According to news agency ANI, a speeding truck coming from the wrong way rammed into a car and 2 two-wheelers, which led to the casualties. A case of negligent and rash driving will be registered by Mundlana village police, under whose jurisdiction the site of accident falls.

According to the recent statistics released by the Union Ministry of Roads and Highways, Haryana records 14 deaths on an average per day due to road accidents. In 2017, a total of 5,120 people lost their lives in 11,258 road accidents reported in the state.
