Bengaluru, July 21: A sniffer dog of the Karnataka Police ran for over 12 kilometres to help cops track down and arrest a murder accused. The incident took place in Basavapattana in Davengere district. The 10-year-old Doberman Pinscher, Tunga, was brought at the last location of the murder accused, Chetan, and from there it ran for more than 12 km before stopping outside a house in Kashipur. According to a report, Chetan had borrowed Rs 1.7 lakh from his friend Chandra Nayak, who had repeatedly asked for the money to be returned. Chetan, who has a police record, then got suspicious of Chandra Nayak and saw him as a threat. On July 10, following an argument, Chetan pulled out a revolver, stolen from a police station during an earlier crime, and allegedly shot Nayak dead.

For a week, police continued searching for Chetan but got no success. The department then turned to its in-house superstar Tunga. The sniffer dog and her handler, Head Constable Prakash, picked up from Chetan's last known location, ran for more than 12 km and stopped outside a house in Kashipur. The police questioned the occupants and eventually found Chetan there. on interrogation, he confessed to his crime and stealing a police revolver from a police station in Hubli.

Tunga has helped solve 50 murder cases and 60 thefts, Hanumantha Rai, the Police Superintendent of Davengere district, told NDTV. "She is our hero," said Amar Kumar Pandey, Additional DGP (Karnataka), who came to Davengere to felicitate her.
