The Santacruz police in Mumbai's suburban area registered an FIR (first information report) against a female worker working at the SNDT Women's University Hostel located in Juhu. The report states that the woman worker, a female warden of the university, allegedly forced a student to strip to prove that the girl is suffering from a skin infection.
As news of the incident spread after the student narrated her ordeal, students staged a protest on the Juhu campus of the university. The 19-year-old student, who is studying in BTech third-year, is from Jammu and Kashmir. Talking to the English daily The Times of India, the complainant student was quoted by the paper and said that due to a skin infection, doctor has advised her to wear sleeveless top and also suggested a shawl to protect her skin. However, a few days back when the student was returning from her lunch to the hostel room, warden Rachna Jhaveri called the student and inquired as to why was she wearing sleeveless top. When the student informed the warden about the decision, the female warden refused to believe her and said that students make such excuses to wear clothes of their choice. The student claims that she was then taken to another room and made to strip to prove that she was suffering from a skin infection. Following the incident, SNDT students took to social media to vent out their anger and protest against hostel warden Jhaveri. A student even tagged HRD minister Prakash Javadekar and demanded that action be taken against the warden. SNDT authorities have said that they have received a written complaint against the warden and that a committee will be formed to look into the matter. The police, meanwhile, has registered a case under IPC 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) against warden Rachana Jhaveri. The police has also asked the warden to produce herself at the Santacruz police station on Monday morning.
