New Delhi, May 26: Senior BJP leader Smriti Irani rushed to Amethi from the national capital on Sunday after being informed about the assassination of party worker and her close aide Surendra Singh. Irani, after meeting the bereaved family members, lended shoulder to the deceased's body for cremation.
Singh, who actively campaigned for Irani over the last 5 years in Amethi, was shot dead late last night by unidentified assailants. The late BJP worker's son has raised suspicion against local Congress workers, who were allegedly angered by Singh's active electioneering during the polls which led to Rahul Gandhi's defeat from the family stronghold. Singh had also served as a former pradhan of Barauli village in Amethi, which falls under Jamo police station limits. The BJP state leadership had acknowledged his efforts after Irani scripted an unprecedented win against Gandhi in the 2019 general elections.
Late on Sunday night, when Singh was asleep in the verandah outside his house, bike-borne assailants arrived and pumped bullets into him. The suspects fled from the spot before locals could apprehend them.
Singh was rushed to the nearest medical facility, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed DGP OP Singh to take strict action against all those involved. 7 suspects have been rounded up following the preliminary probe.
