Shiv Sena MP Hemant Patil Goes Against Party Line, Endorses CAA And NRC

Mumbai, December 25: Even as Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has criticized the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a Shiv Sena MP on Wednesday backed CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Sena MP from Maharashtra, Hemant Patil has reportedly written a letter to Hingoli District Magistrate in support of Citizenship Law and NRC, which his party has criticized. In Lok Sabha, the Shiv Sena had voted for the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. However, it abstained in the Rajya Sabha reportedly after Indian National Congress was unhappy with Sena's move in the lower house of Parliament. CAA Protests: 'Those Born Before 1987 or Whose Parents Are Born Before 1987 Are Indians', Says Government.

"I could not join the rally in support of the CAA and NRC as I was busy in meetings. I express regret for that. I supported these issues in the Lok Sabha. The Shiv Sena has always been a Hindutva party. I fully support these two issues and I am writing to you for that," Patil wrote, NDTV reported.

Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said that amended Citizenship Law and NRC won't be implemented in the state, The Hindu report. Thackeray also scrapped former CM Devendra Fadnavis’s decision to built the state’s first detention centre in Navi Mumbai's Nerul, a report said.
