New Delhi, July 20: Mortal remains of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit brought to her residence in Delhi’s Nizamuddin on Saturday evening. Her body will be taken to Congress headquarters in New Delhi after 11:30 am on July 21. Thereafter, Sheila Dikshit’s final journey towards Nigam Bodh Ghat will begin where her body will be cremated. Dikshit died on Saturday due to cardiac arrest at Delhi’s Escorts Hospital. She was 81-years of age. The Congress veteran was the longest-serving chief minister of Delhi. She held the post for 15 years from 1998 to 2013. She also served as Governor of Kerala for seven months from March 2014 to August 2014.
"Sheila Dikshit was managed well by a team of doctors. At 3:15 pm she again suffered a cardiac arrest. She was put on the ventilator and at 3:55 pm she passed away peacefully," Dr Ashok Seth, Director of Escorts Fortis, said. Months ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she was appointed as Delhi’s Congress Chief by the then party chief Rahul Gandhi.
Dikshit was born into a family of politicians in Punjab. She joined active politics in Uttar Pradesh after her marriage to Vinod Dikshit, son of independence activist and former West Bengal Governor Uma Shankar Dikshit. It was Dikshit's regime that the construction of Delhi Metro began and expanded.
