Shawarma Kills Girl in Tamil Nadu: Class Nine Student Dies After Eating Chicken Shawarma in Nammakkal

Chennai, September 18: A tragic incident occurred in the Nammakkal District of Tamil Nadu, where a 14-year-old girl died after consuming chicken shawarma from a local hotel. The deceased, identified as D Kalaiyarsi, was a ninth-class student hailing from AS Pattai in Namakkal town.

The Times of India reported that several others fell ill after eating the shawarma from the same hotel. On the evening of September 16, Kalaiyarsi, with five members of her family, went out and purchased chicken shawarma and various other dishes from a nearby hotel. Subsequently, all of them experienced vomiting and stomach discomfort after consuming the food. Following the deteriorating condition of their health, the entire family was swiftly admitted to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Kalaiyarsi succumbed to her illness the following Monday while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Namakal town police have informed that other family members are currently in stable condition, and the body of the deceased has been sent for postmortem examination. On Sunday night, thirteen medical students who had consumed chicken shawarma from the same hotel experienced health issues and were subsequently admitted to Namakkal Government Hospital. District Collector S Uma of Nammakal visited the hospitalised students and took charge of a team from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to conduct an inspection of the hotel in question. During the inspection, it was found that all food items, including the raw materials, were disposed of, and as a precautionary measure, the hotel was sealed off.
