Shaktikanta Das Appointed as New RBI Governor After Urjit Patel's Resignation

The appointment of the new RBI Governor comes a day after Urjit Patel resigned. Patel, who had a run-in with the government over the autonomy of the central bank had resigned from his post on Monday.

New Delhi, December 11: Shaktikanta Das, former finance secretary and the current member of the finance commission, became the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor, reports informed. The appointment of the new RBI Governor comes a day after Urjit Patel resigned. Das has been appointed as the Governor for a period of three years. He retired as the Economic Affairs Secretary in May 2017.

Patel, who had a run-in with the government over the autonomy of the central bank had resigned from his post on Monday. In his statement, Patel said he was privileged to serve in the Reserve Bank of India in various capacities over the years. "I take this opportunity to express gratitude to my colleagues and Directors of the RBI Central Board, and wish them all the best for the future, " Patel said in a statement.

  • Shaktikanta Das, a retired 1980 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, took charge as the new RBI Governor on December 10.
  • Das has been a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission of India, and India's Sherpa to G20.
  • During his career as an IAS officer, he served in various capacities for Indian and Tamil Nadu governments, including as Economic Affairs Secretary of India, Revenue Secretary of India, Fertilizers Secretary of India.
  • Das was appointed as Union Economic Affairs Secretary by ACC in August 2016. He assumed the office of Secretary on 31 August 2016.

After assuming office, Das will be the 25th Governor of the RBI. Patel was appointed the 24th Governor of the RBI on September, 2016 for a three-year term. According to reports, Patel said he has decided to step down with immediate effect.
