Shaheen Bagh Protests: Delhi Police Appeals Anti-CAA Demonstrators to Clear Kalindi Kunj Stretch in 'Larger Public Interest'

The Delhi Police stressed that Road No 13-A, which connects Shaheen Bagh with Kalindi Kunj, is used by school buses ferrying children and ambulances taking those in dire need of medical treatment to the hospitals. The continued blockade at the highway, which has now crossed 33 days, is causing 'suffering' to the residents, the police added.

New Delhi, January 17: With the anti-CAA demonstration at Shaheen Bagh crossing a month's period, the Delhi Police on Friday issued an appeal to protesters to withdraw from the arterial Kalindi Kunj stretch in "larger public interest". In a statement issued by the police department, the inconvenience being caused to commuters and emergency service providers was cited as the reason behind their appeal to end the ongoing agitation at Shaheen Bagh.

"We appeal to agitators at Road No. 13 A Shaheen Bagh to understand the sufferings that the complete highway blockade is causing to residents of Delhi and NCR, Senior Citizens, emergency patients and school going children. The matter has also come up before the Hon'ble High Court," the statement said.

Withdraw in Larger Public Interest: Delhi Police

The Kalindi Kunj-Shaheen Bagh road is barricaded since December 15, 2019, in view of the massive assembly of anti-CAA protesters, comprising majorly of women. The matter reached the Delhi High Court this week, where a petition which sought the evacuation of demonstrators from the arterial stretch, was taken up.

The Delhi High Court bench, led by Chief Justice DN Patel, ruled on Tuesday that a judicial order cannot be issued to remove the protesters from the site of agitation. The bench, however, asked the police to look for alternative measures, including dialogue with the agitators, to resolve the traffic woes being faced by the locals. Following the court order, the police had issued a statement confirming that force would not be used to remove the protesters from Shaheen Bagh.
