New Delhi, June 3: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that severe heatwave conditions will prevail over north and central parts of the country for the next 48 hours. A severe heatwave condition will sweep Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in the next 48 hours, the IMD said in its five-day forecast on Sunday. A heatwave is considered if the maximum temperature o reaches 45 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days.
Heatwave conditions will continue in parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh. However, thunderstorms and dust storms are likely in some parts, including Delhi, on Monday, that may bring down temperatures marginally. Rajasthan's Churu remained the hottest place with a maximum of 48.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Maharashtra Reels Under Severe Heatwave Condition, Nagpur Sizzles at 45 Degrees Celsius.
"Due to easterly winds at lower levels over northern parts of the country, the severity of the heatwave is very likely to decrease over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh today (Sunday) onwards," the IMD said. However, severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist over Madhya Pradesh and west Rajasthan on Monday, it added. Churu in Rajasthan Records Hottest Day at 50 Degree Celsius.
"Maximum temperatures are very likely to rise gradually by 2-4°C over major parts of northwestern India in the next three to four days. They are likely to remain above normal by 2-3°C over some parts of south peninsula in the next three days," the IMD forecast said.
Residents of Delhi and surrounding areas may see some respite from the heat on June 3 as the IMD forecasts "very likely" thunderstorm/duststorm accompanied with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
From June 7 to 9, the IMD has forecast widespread rain over parts of east India, northeastern and south peninsular India, with isolated heavy falls over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, south interior Karnataka and Kerala.
