Sensex Sheds Gains, Plunges Over 150 Points To 39,200; Nifty Down At 11,782

The 30-share index was trading at 39,557.70, up by 205.03 points or 0.52% at 9.15 AM. In a similar movement, the broader NSE Nifty soared 28.85 or 0.24% at 11,857.10

Mumbai, May 21: Domestic benchmark indices- BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty extended their rally for the second day Tuesday. Sensex breached its previous highest mark of 39,487 and was trading at 39,554.28 during early morning trade. The 30-share index jumped 202 points to open at 39,555.24 in the opening trade, while Nifty touched 11,857 mark as investors cheered exit poll results that showed a likely win for the ruling NDA in the general elections. However, after hitting record highs on Tuesday's opening session, the domestic indices fluctuated considerably. At 1 PM, Sensex plunged 151 points down to 39,200.70 while the broader Nifty was down by 51 points at 11,776.55.  The benchmark indices on Tuesday traded flat in the afternoon trade.

On Monday, the NSE Nifty surged over 421 points to log its best single day gains in over 10 years. Meanwhile, the 30-share BSE gauge also registered its biggest one-day rise in the last six years.

Riding on the exit poll wave, the Sensex on Monday vaulted 1,422 points to close at a record 39,352.67 as investors cheered as exit polls showed a clear mandate for the Narendra Modi-led NDA in the Lok Sabha elections. A majority of exit polls have predicted a clear majority for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is expected to win over 300 seats in the parliament election. The counting of vote will take place on May 23.
