Section 377 Verdict: Gay Sex Not a Crime but Will Not Support Same-Sex Marriage, Says RSS

Mumbai, Sep 6: Hours after the Supreme Court's historic verdict on Section 377, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Thursday said that the organisation does not believe homosexuality is a crime, but marriages between same same-sex are against nature. Arun Kumar, Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh added saying that like the Supreme Court, RSS too, doesn't consider this a crime but traditionally the Indian society too doesn't recognise such relations.
"Like the Supreme Court, we too do not consider this a crime. However, same-sex marriage and relationship are neither natural nor desirable which is why we do not support such relationships", he was quoted by ANI. "A man usually learns by experiences which is why this subject has to be dealt at social and psychological levels", Arun Kumar added.
The Court today unanimously decriminalised part of the 158-year-old law under Section 377 of the IPC which criminalises consensual unnatural sex, a law introduced by the British in 1861. A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court unanimously decriminalised part of the colonial law prompting joyous tears, hugs and dancing across the country.
Members of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups held tearful celebrations across the country as the historic verdict was read out. "The law had become a weapon for harassment for the LGBT community," said chief justice Dipak Misra while he quashed the cornerstone of Section 377.
