Imphal, December 22: The Manipur government on Saturday imposed Section 144 of CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) in entire Imphal West district for two months. Section 144 prohibits the assembly of five or more people, holding meetings or carrying weapons. District Magistrate Naorem Praveen Singh, in an order, said that Section 144 was imposed because he has been informed that "there is a likelihood of serious breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquillity and grave danger to human lives and properties in the area". Earlier in February, ahead of the tabling of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in Rajya Sabha, prohibitory orders were imposed in Imphal East and Imphal West districts for an indefinite period. The Bill was not passed at that time. However, the Bill got Parliament's approval on December 13 and has now become the Citizenship Amendment Act. Besides several petitions before the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the Act, there have been protests in several parts of the country especially in the northeast. The CAA provides Indian citizenship to immigrants fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan - but not if they are Muslim. Many see the CAA through the prism of nationwide NRC drive. While non-Muslims left out of the proposed nationwide NRC would be able to get citizenship under the CAA, Muslims who could not make the list may be deported.
