School Girls in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvarur Attempt Suicide Over 'Defamatory Graffiti'

Tiruvarur, July 31: Three school girls in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvarur town attempted suicide after a miscreants had put up a defamatory graffiti on their school wall with scandalous statements scribbled about them.
Fearing ostracisation and massive humiliation from their peers, the students took the extreme step, the police found in the preliminary probe. The girls, all aged 12, drank poison with the intent to end their lives. They are currently being treated in hospital, with their conditions reported to be stable.
The trio were in eighth standard. A police complaint has been registered, with the investigators looking into the role of the miscreants. They can be booked for abatement to suicide under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code.
No detentions or arrest were made by the time this report was first published. The police is recording the statements of school students and teachers to get leads into the case. The school authorities are also asked to ensure the girls are not harassed in the premises when they return to academics.
