SBI Reward Points Scam: 3 Swindle INR 2.35 Lakh From Chennai Man’s Bank Account After Sending Him Phishing Link on Mobile Phone, Arrested From West Bengal

Narayankar clicked on the link and entered his details, including profile password, PAN number, etc, assuming the message to be genuine and sent by the bank. Soon after he submitted the details, the complaint received a message stating INR 2.35 lakh was debited from his bank account.

Chennai, September 27: The Tamil Nadu police recently arrested three people from West Bengal for allegedly duping a Chennai resident of INR 2.35 lakh. Police officials said that the three accused, who were arrested on Wednesday, September 25, allegedly swindled the money from the victim's account by sending him a phishing link on his mobile phone.

The Cyber Crime Police (East Zone) of Chennai police said that the incident came to light after 60-year-old Debendran Narayankar, a resident of Nungambakkam, lodged a complaint with the police last year. In his complaint, Narayankar said that on August 4, he received a link "SBI YONO Reward Points - Rs. 9730", reports The HinduChennai Shocker: 16-Year-Old Girl Returning From Tuition Abducted and Gang-Raped Near Thalambur, 3 Arrested.

The complainant also said that the message claimed that the reward points would expire on the same day. Narayankar clicked on the link and entered his details, including profile password, PAN number, etc, assuming the message to be genuine and sent by the bank. Soon after he submitted the details, the complaint received a message stating INR 2.35 lakh was debited from his bank account.

Realising he was duped, Narayankar approached the police, who launched a probe. After analysing the call and bank account details, cops traced the money to a bank account in West Bengal. Post their arrest, the accused were brought to Chennai and remanded to judicial custody after being produced in a court. Speaking about the alleged SBI reward points scam, cops said that the fraud fraudsters sending fake messages about the expiry of reward points. Following this, the scamsters ask to click on the link and download a file, which, in reality, gives them access to confidential information, including banking credentials.
