New Delhi, January 3: On 189th birth anniversary of 19th-century social reformer Savitribai Phule on January 3, the nationwide protests has been planned by women and queer communities to demand scrapping National Population Register (NPR), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and Trans Act 2019. Organisations like- All Indian Democratic Women’s Association, All India Network of Sex Workers, Jamia Queer Collective, Hasratein: A Queer Collective, Mahila Nigrani Parishad – Women’s Federation, Pinjra Tod, National Network of Sex Workers, National Hawker Federation, National Network of Sex Workers etc -are coming together to protest against CAA, NRC and NPR. Nearly 100 organisation have planned to fight against the amended Citizenship law, NRC and NPC from January 3 onwards in multiple agitations. Addressing media at the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) in Mumbai, Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav said that at least six national-level protests have been planned in January.
The first protest on Savitribai Phule divas on Friday. The next protest is "Bharat Bandh", planned by Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and other left organisations on January 8. The third one is intended on Youth Day (January 12), while fourth, fifth and sixth demonstrations are planned on January 17, January 26 and January 30.
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) seeks to grant Indian nationality to six religious minorities who fled from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh before 2015 and faced religious persecution. The law has been criticised by many and resulted in mass protests across the country.
January 3 is the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule. She played a major role in the upliftment of women in India. She worked towards women education and empowerment at a time when it was considered taboo. Regarded as the first female rights and education activist, Phule played a crucial role in battling casteism.
